Ye Lu Qin chuckled to himself, exchanging pleasantries with the high-ranking officials in the manor.
Smith, the arms tycoon, respectfully raised his glass of red wine to Ye Lu Qin, offering a toast:
“Mr. Ye Lu Qin, it’s an honor for all of us to have you join us. Together, we will secure this pie for ourselves.”
“I raise a glass to you, and to the endless wealth and glory we will enjoy.”
Amidst the laughter and chatter, Wilson, the medical tycoon, smirked and nodded in agreement towards Ye Lu Qin, saying:
“You are the most impressive person I have ever met. You can easily lead hundreds of millions of people, which is far beyond the capabilities of us petty bosses.”
“The future direction of the world will be determined by you.”
The other high-ranking officials echoed his sentiments: “That’s right. Mr. Ye Lu Qin is destined to be the most outstanding leader in human history.”
“It is the greatest honor of my life to work with you. Allow me to offer you a toast!”
Ye Lu Qin smiled with restraint, his heart already overflowing with joy.
It was so much better to have national freedom. He couldn't have had this kind of luxury in the Soviet Union.
After a feast of delicious food and beautiful entertainment, the young ladies escorted Ye Lu Qin back to his lavish suite.
The American high-ranking officials laughed even louder after Ye Lu Qin left.
Their faces were filled with greed and arrogance.
“Bah! The most outstanding? More like the fattest pig!”
Smith, the arms tycoon, laughed disdainfully: “Hahaha, he’s working hard, though.”
“First we’ll bring down the Soviet Union, then we'll take all the good stuff back and divide it up among ourselves.”
“I’ve had my eye on their weapons factories for months!”
“I’ve already claimed all the oil fields in the Soviet Union’s member states. You can have your own share.”
By now, Ye Lu Qin’s seat was piled high with leftover trash, and someone had even spat on it.
In the eyes of these Western high-ranking officials, Ye Lu Qin was nothing more than a fool who had been sold but was still helping count the money.
Another juicy piece of meat had been served.
…
An hour later, Ye Lu Qin arrived at the airport under the protection of a secret convoy.
He was preparing to travel to another Baltic country for a secret meeting to discuss the aftermath of the Soviet Union's collapse.
But just as he was about to board his private plane, his bodyguards urgently told him to take a call.
The caller was none other than Kirko, the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Soviet Union, who had learned about the Konev coup.
Ye Lu Qin frowned, a sense of unease washing over him when he heard Kirko’s voice.
He put down the documents in his hand, his heart slightly uneasy as he responded:
“Hello, Kirko. What’s the matter?”
His voice sounded relaxed, but he couldn’t hide the anxiety in his heart.
On the other end of the line, Kirko’s voice was urgent and serious, as if something momentous was about to unfold.
“Mr. President, I have urgent news. Gorba seems to have signed an emergency decree, transferring power to the Emergency Committee. His son, Konev, has teamed up with most of the military and political leadership to launch a coup!”
Ye Lu Qin’s mind went blank, and he instinctively took a step back, his hand trembling as he gripped the phone.
“A coup? What are you talking about?”
He tried to sound calm, but the shock and unease in his eyes were evident.
“The Kremlin is surrounded and under emergency lockdown, with a nationwide curfew announced. High-ranking officials loyal to the breakup have been taken into custody by Konev, and it seems that many people involved in the breakup have gone missing.”
Kirko’s words were like a heavy hammer striking Ye Lu Qin’s chest.
He felt his blood run cold, and his thoughts became muddled.
“This…how is that possible? Wasn’t Konev a supporter of the breakup? He… he’s launching a coup against his father?”
Ye Lu Qin’s voice dropped to a low murmur, his brows furrowed.
“Mr. President, the situation is very volatile.”
Kirko’s voice was filled with urgency, but he managed to stay calm. “Konev controls a small contingent of troops. The situation is very dangerous. You need to be careful.”
“What about Putin? He must have received the news earlier. How could he allow this to happen!”
Ye Lu Qin became agitated, his fingers tapping rapidly on the table, the sound crisp and hurried.
Kirko’s voice became even more tense: “The situation is complex. Mr. Putin has also lost contact.”
“Many liberal high-ranking officials have been arrested, and protests have been suppressed. The breakup faction in Moscow is in a panic, but fortunately, the news hasn’t leaked out yet.”
“Ye Lu Qin choked, but then a surge of determination and confidence surged through him.
He was determined to fight back against this sudden coup.
Ye Lu Qin knew that he had accumulated a vast amount of public support over the years.”
“He had a large number of supporters, and he had the assistance of both his own media and the Western media.
Even if he wiped out Konev’s troops, he could still pin the blame for treason on them and maintain his reputation.
He could even use this incident to increase his standing!
So Ye Lu Qin said in a deep voice, “I still have influence over the people. All I have to do is go back, and I can rally those foolish pigs against Konev!”
“I don’t believe it! That Konev, even with his troops, dares to fire on those meat shields?”
“Besides, those troops are certainly on our side. The advantage is ours. We have nothing to fear!”
Kirko swallowed hard, his voice laced with worry and helplessness.
“Right now, there’s unrest among the high-ranking officials of the Union, and with Konev’s threat, you might face great risks if you return.”
“Please be careful, Mr. President.”
“I don’t care!”
The more Kirko cautioned him, the more agitated Ye Lu Qin became.
Ye Lu Qin gritted his teeth and said confidently, “Prepare the security detail. Have them meet me at the Moscow International Airport.”
“That little brat dares to seize power in front of me? He’s gone too far! This time, Gorba won’t be able to protect him!”
His face was set with an unyielding expression, his eyes filled with disdain.
In his mind, there was no way that little boy, Gorba’s son, could turn the tide against him.
“Mr. President, listen to me. If you go back now, the situation will be dire. You might even be trapped by Konev’s troops.”
Kirko’s voice became increasingly anxious as he tried to persuade him once more.
“Are you kidding me? I have a million troops in the Soviet Union’s member states. Are we afraid of him?!”
“Besides, I can mobilize the people. Would he dare order his troops to kill tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of our countrymen?”
“The free citizens of the country still need me to awaken them. We can’t wait any longer!”
“I have to go back. I can’t let Konev continue to seize power!”
Ye Lu Qin’s eyes were firm as he said decisively.
He knew this was a life-or-death decision, and he was confident he would win.
“Alright, I’ll mobilize the KGB and our troops to the airport and along your route.”
Kirko finally relented, his voice becoming more tense, but he still urged him: “Be careful!”
