Chapter 7
Cracking the Eighteen-String Mechanism

The opening remained small, looking like a thief's hole.

But the inside of the hole was square, obviously a secret passage.

It must be related to the mechanism on the horse before.

Only by breaking the mechanism could this secret passage be revealed.

The thought of hundreds of silk threads in the mechanism made everyone's scalp tingle.

"I feel like even our elders would be defeated here."

Zhang Hai Xing turned to look at the horse and said involuntarily.

"This little ghost is quite capable, huh."

Zhang Jiu Ri said.

Zhang Nian scoffed, "Cut it out! Like anyone can't do it?"

"Now the mechanism has been broken, why don't you go and try how many wires you'll hit?"

Zhang Bei couldn't stand Zhang Nian anymore. If it weren't for the need to cooperate.

He would have slapped him long ago.

"You, a good-for-nothing, dare to say that to me?" Zhang Nian said angrily.

Zhang Bei chuckled, "Is it so hard to admit that others are better than you? I wonder who gave you the confidence? Liang Jing Ru?"

"Who is Liang Jing Ru?" Zhang Hai Xing asked.

Zhang Hai Xing had witnessed the danger, especially Zhang Bei's reaction. He had dodged those flying knives so effortlessly.

He hadn't even affected the rope, which showed that Zhang Bei wasn't as useless as they said.

Her own hand had moved, almost losing her grip.

This incident made Zhang Hai Xing have a slight change of opinion about the two of them.

"Alright, I'll say it again, we are a team, if anyone gets hurt, it will deduct points for our wild exploration trial."

Seeing that Zhang Nian was about to explode, Zhang Hai Ke quickly said.

But looking at Zhang Bei, Zhang Hai Ke still had some doubts.

This guy was considered a good-for-nothing by the family, and he usually hung out with petty officials.

He didn't even have the guts to talk to others.

If it wasn't because Zhang Bei was from the main branch of the family, he might have been eaten by someone already.

Zhang Nian always thought highly of himself, believing he was no worse than anyone else.

He was ambitious and ruthless, and few among the younger generation of the Zhang family dared to provoke him.

But now Zhang Bei actually had the courage to oppose Zhang Nian, which was quite impressive.

"Who goes down first?" Zhang Hai Xing asked, ignoring them.

Zhang Nian pointed at Zhang Bei, "You go down."

Zhang Bei didn't object, he lowered the rope and slid down.

The secret passage was initially paved with bricks.

It should be the foundation of the tomb chamber that was lying on its side.

As Zhang Bei held a lantern in one hand and descended along the rope, they could see the situation below.

"Strange, why is there a secret passage in the corner of the tomb chamber?" Zhang Hai Ke looked puzzled.

Zhang Jiu Ri said, "Maybe this tomb chamber is just a facade.

Little ghost, didn't you say many people have been here? But why is there no corpse here?"

"I have some guesses."

Zhang Hai Xing said.

Zhang Nian asked, "What do you think?"

"That mutated eighteen-string mechanism, I think even our elders would be helpless against it.

So ordinary martial arts experts wouldn't even have the qualifications to enter here.

And the little ghost said before that this place once experienced a mudslide.

Do you think there might be other passages, and others might not even be able to find this tomb chamber?"

Zhang Hai Xing shared her thoughts.

"It's not impossible!" Zhang Hai Ke said.

As they were discussing, Zhang Bei had reached the bottom.

"Any discoveries?" Zhang Jiu Ri called out to Zhang Bei.

Zhang Bei reported truthfully, "It's an earthen kiln below, it should be artificially dug.

There are bricks to reinforce it, but the workmanship is rough. No mechanism has been found so far."

Hearing this, the others didn't hesitate and slid down the rope one after another.

The walls of the secret passage were all hard earth, not the soft mud they had seen before.

This means that they had left the range of the mudslide.

When they all got down, they discovered that the earthen kiln's surroundings were very irregular.

The walls were sometimes crooked, and some parts even had temporary walls built by hand.

They should have been used to prevent the walls from collapsing, which was somewhat astonishing.

At this moment, the earthen kiln seemed very hasty.

"This should be a temporary camp."

Zhang Hai Ke's face instantly changed.

Zhang Bei naturally knew what a temporary camp meant. It meant that someone had encountered a very difficult situation while exploring a tomb.

Therefore, they dug a temporary camp in a relatively safe place.

It served as a base, allowing for both offense and defense.

This meant that the place ahead was also very dangerous.

As they continued towards the end of the earthen kiln.

They saw a well-built wall at the very end of the earthen kiln.

There was a hole in the middle of the wall, which could only allow one person to reach in.

The wall was double-layered, interlocked and very strong.

It was almost impossible to forcefully destroy it, the only option was to dismantle the bricks one by one.

There were already a few bricks removed from the bottom of the wall.

Zhang Hai Ke picked up a brick, blew off the dust.

He found a long fingerprint, two fingers long.

Zhang Hai Ke compared it, the fingerprint was about the same length as their fingers.

"This is our Zhang family's unique skill."

Zhang Hai Ke was shocked.

This was the unique skill of the Zhang family: "Golden Two Fingers" of the "Fa Qiu Tan Xue" (literally "Emitting Mound Exploring Cave").

It was a tomb-exploring technique that every member of the Zhang family learned.

This skill required training from a young age, soaking the two fingers in medicinal water and then lengthening them with a secret technique.

Once mastered, the two fingers would have immense strength, easily unlocking delicate mechanisms.

Earlier, the petty official used this skill to unlock the mutated eighteen-string mechanism.

"That means someone from the Zhang family has been here? But isn't this Zhang Family Manor?

Isn't it where we lived before we went to the Northeast?"

Zhang Nian also expressed his confusion, he couldn't understand.

Since this was Zhang Family Manor, although it was buried, they shouldn't have set up a temporary camp here.

Most importantly, the mutated eighteen-string mechanism in the tomb chamber before.

This kind of mechanism wasn't something anyone could set up, only some masters of the Zhang family could do it.

At least among them, none of them could crack even a normal eighteen-string mechanism, let alone a mutated one.

"Could the mudslide that happened back then have had another reason? And maybe something big happened in Zhang Family Manor."

Zhang Jiu Ri said to everyone.

"Hey, little ghost? What do you two have to say about the good-for-nothing?"

Zhang Nian suddenly shouted at the petty official and Zhang Bei.

"Can you please watch your language?" Zhang Hai Xing said unhappily.

Zhang Bei and the petty official didn't even bother to respond, letting them guess on their own.

It was like watching clowns performing, which irritated Zhang Nian.

"If you want to know, just take a look?" Zhang Jiu Ri said.

He took out a tinder and lit it.

He directly threw the tinder into the small hole.

But to everyone's surprise, the tinder extinguished as soon as it was thrown in.

This immediately shocked everyone, it meant that there was likely no air inside.
