Chapter 20
The Bizarre Food Chain

Fortunately, he was quick-witted and rolled away to the side.

The large tongue slapped against the wall.

After missing its target, the large tongue tried to retract.

But Zhang Yun Feng wouldn't let it go so easily.

With lightning speed, he stretched out his index and middle fingers and clamped down on the large tongue, pulling it forcefully outward.

He wanted to see what was behind that tongue.

“Ribbit… Ribbit…”

A few croaks came from the gap in the corner.

Under his tug, the tongue's owner appeared!

Zhang Yun Feng's eyes widened in shock.

It was a toad the size of a millstone!

Its body was covered with numerous poison glands, the large ones the size of goose eggs, the smaller ones about the size of chicken eggs.

The giant toad's tongue was clamped by Zhang Yun Feng and couldn't retract, causing it to croak in pain. It had no choice but to reveal itself.

“You greedy toad, how dare you try to eat me?” Zhang Yun Feng was both surprised and angry.

This toad wasn't even as big as him, yet it wanted to eat him. Its appetite was too big, wasn't it?

After appearing, the toad didn't attack him. It just kept croaking, seeming quite docile.

“It seems it mistook me for an insect?”

Seeing that it wasn't a threat, he released its tongue.

The toad croaked twice and then hopped away from his sight. It was unknown where it went.

Zhang Yun Feng didn't chase after it.

After all, this creature didn't seem worth many achievement points. And another thing, toads were an important part of the ecological chain. Killing it might disrupt the balance here, leading to a mosquito infestation or something.

As a result, the toad didn't go far before it started croaking again nearby. It was unknown why.

Out of curiosity, Zhang Yun Feng followed it.

Reaching a wider crack, he saw the toad catching insects to eat. Its large tongue shot out, catching a large insect in one go.

Upon closer inspection, it wasn't just any insect, but a super-sized mosquito! It was as big as a fist!

Zhang Yun Feng gasped.

Such huge mosquitoes, if a person were to be bitten by a few of them, wouldn't they be drained dry?

More chillingly, this crack was very humid, full of water, so the vegetation was very lush.

There were also many mosquitoes everywhere.

As soon as he appeared, several large mosquitoes sensed his presence and flew towards him, ready for a feast!

For these detestable insects, Zhang Yun Feng didn't show any mercy. He swung his black gold ancient sword and began to chop wildly.

A few swings later, he had slain three or four mosquitoes!

“Killing a hundred-year-old female mosquito, rewarded with 500 achievement points!”

“Killing a hundred-year-old female mosquito, rewarded with 500 achievement points!”

“Killing a fifty-year-old female mosquito, rewarded with 200 achievement points!”

Hearing the system's announcement, Zhang Yun Feng was quite surprised.

As far as he knew, the lifespan of ordinary female mosquitoes was between 35 to 80 days. However, the mosquitoes here were hundreds of years old!

Their lifespan was ten times, a hundred times longer!

“Is their food source that abundant? Or does the environment here significantly extend their lifespan?”

Zhang Yun Feng was extremely puzzled.

Everything here was too bizarre, subverting his understanding.

However, with so many mosquitoes around, he could harvest a wave of achievement points. He didn't have time to think too much.

He directly swung his black gold ancient sword, charging into the swarm of mosquitoes to slaughter them!

In a single face-off, he killed seven or eight large mosquitoes!

The toad wasn't afraid of him either. Seeing the food here, it immediately hopped over to his side.

Then it stretched out its large tongue, rolled up the mosquito corpses on the ground, and devoured them with gusto.

“You sneaky bastard, you know how to enjoy the fruits of others' labor…” Zhang Yun Feng laughed and scolded.

After spending over half an hour, Zhang Yun Feng had killed one hundred and eighty mosquitoes. The remaining mosquitoes, frightened, flew away.

Zhang Yun Feng didn't bother chasing them. He continued to search for a water source.

Walking a few dozen steps forward, he finally heard the sound of water.

The sound of water came from a large crack ahead.

Walking in, he saw water gushing down from the top of the crack, forming a small waterfall.

A large amount of water converged into a small stream, flowing down the low-lying area of the crack.

The water looked quite clean. He guessed it must be spring water flowing down from the mountain top.

He was currently sticky all over, so he didn't care too much. He went directly under the waterfall, letting the spring water wash his body.

The water was very cold, but Zhang Yun Feng could handle it.

He used the waterfall to give himself a scrub, then changed into clean clothes. He rinsed his dirty clothes casually and hung them aside to dry.

After struggling all night, he was now somewhat tired.

So he found a flat spot, took out his kerosene lamp and lit it, hastily eating some bread and water to replenish his energy.

After eating and drinking, he threw the remaining crumbs aside, used his backpack as a pillow, and lay down to sleep.

He didn't know how long he had been asleep, but in a daze, he heard a series of rustling sounds coming from beside him.

Zhang Yun Feng's nerves immediately tightened. He instantly sat up from the ground and looked in the direction of the sound.

This look shocked him. It was a rat, a rat the size of a young calf!

The large rat was thievishly looking around, eating the bread crumbs he had thrown away, looking as if it wasn't satisfied.

As soon as Zhang Yun Feng moved, it was startled and scurried away!

“You rat, where are you going!” Zhang Yun Feng roared.

This damn rat disturbed his sleep, making him very upset.

The next second, the black gold ancient sword flew out, leaving a series of whistling sounds. With a clang, it nailed the large rat to the rock wall!

“Chirp… Chirp…”

The large rat shrieked twice, its four legs kicked, and it died.

“Killing a hundred-year-old giant rat, rewarded with 1000 achievement points!”

Then Zhang Yun Feng came to the rat's body, pulled out his black gold ancient sword, and the rat's body fell to the ground with a thud.

Zhang Yun Feng picked up the rat's body and threw it far away, then went back to sleep.

However, he had only been asleep for less than half an hour when he suddenly heard a “Meow” sound. The sound came from the direction of the large rat's corpse.

Zhang Yun Feng quickly got up and looked in that direction. He saw a “big cat” that was even bigger than a Siberian tiger eating the rat meat!

From its appearance, it was a super-sized tabby cat.

It had no tiger stripes, although not a tiger, it was even bigger than a tiger! This size was too scary!

The super-sized tabby cat was very alert. Seeing Zhang Yun Feng staring at it, it actually opened its bloody mouth and meowed.

Judging from its posture, it seemed to be warning Zhang Yun Feng: Two-legged beast, what are you looking at? Don't disturb the cat's meal!
