Chapter 6
The Procurement Department

After getting the paperwork done, Li Huai De personally escorted Lin Yu to the Procurement Department.

The Procurement Department belonged to the Logistics Department, and they were all in the same building.

“Old Wang ah,” Li Huai De walked into the office of the Procurement Department head, getting straight to the point, “I’m here to bring you a new recruit.”

Wang Hong Jun, the head of the Procurement Department, quickly stood up and said, “Director, what kind of new recruit needs you to personally bring him over? You just need to say a word, and I’ll go pick him up.”

Li Huai De introduced, “Lin Yu, Lin Wei Guo’s second son, is joining the Procurement Department today.”

Then he turned to Lin Yu and said, “Xiao Lin, this is Wang Hong Jun, the head of the Procurement Department, he’ll be your direct supervisor from now on.”

Wang Hong Jun smiled and looked at Lin Yu, saying, “Good heavens, so you’re Lao Lin’s boy! I’ve been waiting for you to come. If you hadn’t come in a few more days, I would have thought you got accepted into college again.”

Hearing this, Lin Yu couldn’t help but blush, quickly saying, “Director Wang, please give me some guidance in the future.”

“Look at that, truly an intellectual, so eloquent,” Wang Hong Jun laughed, “Everyone contributes to a happy marriage.”

There were only two kinds of people who could be brought here by Li Huai De: one was someone useful to him, and the other was someone he needed to curry favor with.

No matter which category Lin Yu belonged to, he was not someone Wang Hong Jun wanted to offend.

Especially since Lin Yu had a father who was the deputy director of the Security Department.

While Lin Wei Guo was just a deputy director of the Security Department, he was in charge of the Security Department’s Internal Affairs Unit.

He was also close to the factory’s militia battalion commander, they were both comrades who had transferred from the same regiment, and their relationship was like brothers.

The five departments with real power in the Security Department were: the Political Security Department, the Security Department, the Public Security Department, the Investigation Department, and the Militia Battalion. These five departments were in charge of the security and public order of the steel mill and the surrounding residential areas.

One could say that their power was already very great.

Departments like the Fire Department, Logistics Department, and Equipment Department had much less power.

Among them, the Security Department had the most personnel, divided into the Internal Affairs Unit and the External Affairs Unit, with 60 people in each unit.

Next came the Militia Battalion, with a configuration of 100 people, like a militia company.

The daily security of the factory was maintained by the Internal Affairs Unit and the Militia Battalion.

“Old Wang, I want to discuss something with you. Xiao Lin has his own connections, he can get wild game, especially big animals like wild boar. I want him to specialize in this, what do you think?” Li Huai De asked.

Wang Hong Jun quickly nodded, “That would be great. Our Procurement Department already has an out-of-plan purchase category, each person can purchase 25 yuan worth of goods every month, it's fine if he doesn't come often.”

“If Xiao Lin can get meat, then our Procurement Department can also hold our heads high in front of our colleagues. I would support him wholeheartedly.”

Wang Hong Jun thought, you old dog have already arranged everything, why do you need to ask me?

Li Huai De nodded, “That’s good, as long as it doesn’t affect work.”

“Old Wang, you issue a firearm permit for Xiao Lin, get him a pistol. He goes to the countryside all the time, we need to ensure his safety.”

Li Huai De deliberately mentioned getting a pistol, afraid that Lin Yu would misunderstand and affect the ownership of the hunted game.

At that time, anyone who went to the countryside for long trips could apply to the factory for a firearm permit, such as projectionists, purchasing agents, rural doctors, drivers, etc.

Especially drivers, if they were to transport important goods, they would be accompanied and protected by the Security Department’s External Affairs Unit.

“Yes, Director Li, don’t worry.” Wang Hong Jun said, “I’ll issue a permit for Xiao Lin right away, then he can go to the Security Department to collect his gun. He can also collect the factory-issued personal supplies at the same time.”

“That’s good.” Li Huai De nodded.

Then he said to Lin Yu, “After Old Wang issues your permit and you get your gun, come to my office to process your gun license.”

“Old Wang, I’m going back now, I’ll leave Xiao Lin in your care.” Li Huai De nodded to Wang Hong Jun.

“Don’t worry, Director, take your time.”

“Director Li, take care.”

After sending Li Huai De away, Wang Hong Jun patted Lin Yu on the shoulder and said, “Good lad, you’ve got some skills.”

“Your father and I were in the same army, though not the same regiment, but we were both in the same division. You can rest assured here, I won’t let you suffer.”

Hearing this, Lin Yu instantly understood what he meant, “With Uncle Wang here, I’m sure I won’t be treated unfairly.”

“Hahaha...” Wang Hong Jun laughed, “You kid, you’re really climbing the ladder, but it’s not wrong, Lao Lin is two years older than me, calling me uncle is fine.”

While talking, Wang Hong Jun opened his drawer and started writing quickly.

“Xiao Yu ah, is it okay for me to call you that?”

Lin Yu quickly said, “Uncle Wang, you’re right, everyone at home calls me that, even my own uncle calls me Xiao Yu.”

Wang Hong Jun nodded, “Xiao Yu, although we’re liberated now, you know the countryside is still dangerous, you have to be careful when you go there, especially those hunters, they all have guns.”

“Take this permit and go find your father first, let him take you to pick out a good gun, and then go to the logistics warehouse downstairs to collect your personal supplies.”

Lin Yu took the permit and said, “Thank you, Uncle Wang. I plan to go into the mountains tomorrow, I won’t be coming these days.”

Wang Hong Jun nodded, “No problem, just remember to report back once a week. Also, be extra careful in the mountains.”

“I know, Uncle Wang.” Lin Yu smiled and nodded, then walked out of the office.

He went downstairs to the logistics warehouse and collected two sets of work clothes, two pairs of gloves, a large enamel teacup, and an aluminum lunch box.

When he got to the Security Department, his father was already waiting at the entrance.

He took Lin Yu to the Equipment Department, and Lin’s father handed the permit to an old man wearing glasses, saying, “Brother Qian, this is my second son.”

“Son, this is Qian You Cai, the head of the Equipment Department, you should call him Uncle Qian,” Lin’s father said to Lin Yu.

“Uncle Qian, good day.” Lin Yu politely greeted him.

Qian You Cai nodded and smiled, taking a cigarette from Lin’s father, saying, “Good lad, you’ve got some backbone. On your first day, you’ve chosen to go to the countryside to run out-of-plan supplies, you’ve got some guts.”

Qian You Cai took a puff of his cigarette, stood up and took out a brand new Type 54 pistol from a small gun cabinet nearby.

This pistol was also called the “Big Black Star” pistol, it was developed in China in 1954 based on the T33 pistol.

“Here you go, lad. This is a new gun, I cleaned it just the other day, it’s already been checked.”

While talking, Qian You Cai took out two magazines and a small box of 50 rounds of pistol ammunition from his drawer.

“I’ll give you two extra magazines, just in case.”

Lin Yu ejected the magazine, disengaged the safety, pulled back the slide to check the chamber, seeing no bullets, he pulled the trigger.

“Click.” The slide went back.

“Hey kid, you’ve had some training? That’s right, with your father, how could you not have played with a gun.”

“Thank you, Uncle Qian.”
