Chapter 10
The Good Hunter

Old Man Lin, unlike Grandma Lin, wasn’t flustered. Instead, he calmly asked,

“Fifth Grandson, tell Grandpa the truth. Did your father know you were coming to the mountain?”

Lin Yu quickly nodded and said, “Of course he knows. Otherwise, with Dad’s stubborn personality, would he let me come? He’s the one who told me to enter the mountain from Linjia Village.”

The old man knew his sons were not reckless, and they were all tough guys who had survived on the battlefield. Naturally, they had their own skills.

His grandsons, this generation of Lin Yu, wouldn't be allowed out without their father’s approval.

Lin Jiang, Lin Shan, and the others were able to join the army and return alive because their father had trained them rigorously since they were young.

Grandma Lin was about to say something, but Old Man Lin quickly stopped her, saying, “Old woman, your second son isn’t an idiot. Would he let his son go to the mountain to be wolf food?”

“Besides, every man in the Lin family has grown up amidst gunpowder smoke since childhood. Entering a mountain is nothing.”

“Go call the eldest. Let’s have pork and scallion dumplings with double noodles for dinner. The eldest and the eldest grandson hunted a wild boar the other day.”

“I’ll take you and my grandson for a walk up the mountain, and also see how much skill this kid has. Don’t let him be a fool with high ambitions but no talent.”

The old lady could only nod helplessly. Parents have always wished for their children to succeed, hoping they would rise above others.

Grandparents also have the same expectations for their grandchildren, hoping they will excel.

Moreover, Grandma Lin had lived through those turbulent times, and she knew that having your own skills was more important than having parents.

Only by mastering your skills could you survive and live a peaceful life.

Just like Linjia Village. If the men of the village weren’t brave and good at fighting, Linjia Village might have been wiped out by the Japanese long ago.

While talking, Old Man Lin opened Lin Yu’s gun bag.

“Hey, good stuff,” Old Man Lin said, holding up the Type 56 semi-automatic rifle and examining it.

With a “click,” he pulled back the bolt, checked it, opened the bottom of the magazine, and loaded it with 10 bullets.

“Come on, grandson, take that shotgun with you. Let's go for a stroll and get some snacks for drinking.” He then took two magazines full of bullets and put them in his pocket.

Lin Yu shrugged helplessly. This old man just couldn’t resist a good gun.

He took out his Jian Wei 5, loaded it with small caliber bullets, and followed his grandfather, both of them carrying guns, as they walked out.

As he stepped out of the house, Old Man Lin yelled towards the dog kennel in the yard, “Tiger, let's go to the mountain!”

“Woof woof woof...” A four-eyed dog with a coat of gold ran out of the kennel, wagging its tail.

“Tiger, where have you been? I didn’t see you when I came back.” Lin Yu squatted down and petted the dog’s head.

Linjia Village was originally a village close to the foot of the mountain, and the men in the village often went hunting in the mountains during their leisure time.

Tiger led the way, and the grandfather and grandson followed behind.

After half an hour, they had already entered the outer edge of the forest.

“Now that the farm work is done, there are more people going up the mountain. If you want to hunt wild boars, you have to go ten or twenty miles deeper into the mountain. Otherwise, you won't see any big game,” Old Man Lin said.

“But you also have to remember that you’re not safe just because you’re on the outskirts. It’s summer, so it’s okay, the wild animals in the mountain don’t lack food. But when it snows, they can’t find food and are more likely to come out and harm people.”

“Encountering a wild boar is fine. It charges straight ahead, so you can easily spot it if you pay attention. But be careful of wolves. They’re cunning, cruel, and can follow you, hiding from you, and wait for you to let your guard down, then attack from behind.”

“We’re in the mountains, so there aren’t large wolf packs. Usually, it’s just groups of three to five wolves. But on the grasslands, wolves are fierce, and there are packs of hundreds!”

As Old Man Lin was talking, Lin Yu’s ears twitched, and he heard a noise in the bushes next to him. He raised his gun and aimed.

Old Man Lin shook his head with a smile, stopping Lin Yu. He picked up two egg-sized stones from the ground.

‘Chirp chirp’ ‘Chirp chirp’

Following the sound, Old Man Lin flicked his wrist and quickly threw the two stones.

Bang bang.

“Bring them back!”

Tiger quickly ran into the bushes and brought out two quails.

“Look at you, a total mess. You can’t even catch up to Tiger. Why did you raise your gun at them? One shot and there’s nothing left,” Old Man Lin rolled his eyes at Lin Yu.

Tiger’s tail wagged furiously, and he gave Lin Yu the same look as Old Man Lin, rolling his eyes.

“Hey, you dog, you’re laughing at me!” Lin Yu rubbed Tiger’s head and scolded him.

“Woof woof woof...”

“Grandson, going into the mountains is not something to be taken lightly. You have to be able to tell what’s approaching from the sounds, from the wind,” Old Man Lin said earnestly.

“To be a good hunter, you have to understand these things.”

Lin Yu nodded. He understood what his grandfather meant.

In the mountains, especially in places with dense trees and forests, the visibility is not good.

Many times, by the time you see the wild animal, it’s already close to you.

So, you have to be able to tell what kind of animal it is, big or small, from the sounds it makes and the sound of its feet against the rocks and gravel.

Especially for large carnivores like bears, they carry a strong smell.

If you smell the scent of a carnivore in the wind, be careful. It means the animal isn’t far away.

That’s why hunters choose to hunt downwind, because animals have a sense of smell. If you’re upwind, the prey will discover you first.

Another thing, when hunting in the mountains, you have to choose a shooting position with no obstructions to your view.

Otherwise, you’ll just be shooting at a tree. What kind of hunting is that?

Hitting a target from a distance of a hundred or two hundred meters with one shot, not impossible, but very rare.

Unless you’re on a mountain ridge, shooting downwards.

Or hunting in an open field, like a hunting ground. In mountainous areas with dense forests, long-distance shooting is not suitable.

To become a good hunter, you need more than just a gun. Hunting isn’t as easy as you think.

Your own strength, the environment, and the weapons you use, all of these are essential.

That’s why most hunters mainly hunt smaller game.
