Chapter 2
The Xuanjia Soldiers Arrive, One Man Holds the Pass

Woo woo woo~

Early in the morning, a rousing bugle call echoed from the distance.

Swoosh swoosh swoosh

A rain of arrows, thick as a canopy, rained down from the sky.

“Shields up!”

The defenders on the city walls quickly raised their shields, bracing against the onslaught of arrows.

Jia Yu, surrounded by a group of warriors clad in black iron armor, quietly hid behind the wall, their heads shielded by heavy shields.

【One hundred Xuanjia soldiers have arrived. They are descendants of the personal troops of the young Rongguo Duke, Jia Daishan, called upon for service under your command. Their weapons and armor are inherited from the young Rongguo Duke.】

“My lord, you're awake!”

The Xuanjia soldier leader, a man in his thirties, held a bag of baked flatbread: “This is some flatbread I picked up on my way up. It's still warm.”

Jia Yu took the flatbread without hesitation and ate it, even tossing a couple of pieces to Zhang Gou Dan.

After devouring the flatbread and taking a gulp of water, Jia Yu asked, “What's the situation now?”

The Xuanjia soldier leader replied, “The situation is not good. The Mongols have brought many cannons captured from Xuanfu, along with siege equipment.

The Jurchens are also attacking Beigu Kou fiercely. If Beigu Kou falls, the Jurchen infantry will enter the pass, and the situation will be even worse.”

“Even worse?” Jia Yu looked out from the wall opening at the Mongol army approaching the city walls, “Can it get any worse than this?

Holding on is not the solution. If only we had a cavalry force to charge out from the Western Gate, straight at the Mongol flanks, they would be severely disadvantaged.”

“The court needs to either defeat the Mongols or negotiate a truce with them.

The Jurchens are the true and most vicious enemies of the Great Zhou.”

Jia Yu casually spoke to the Xuanjia soldier leader. After finishing, he smacked his forehead, “Damn, when did I become so smart?!”

Zhang Gou Dan stayed silent at the side.

Early that morning, a hundred warriors clad in iron armor had appeared in their section of the city, fully equipped for war.

Upon inquiry, they learned that these men were reinforcements for their own lord.

After further investigation, they discovered that their lord was actually the grandson of the Rongguo Duke.

No wonder he was so formidable!

No wonder he could receive such an elite force as reinforcements.

Following their lord, their future was bright!

Tak, tak, tak...

Just then, the hooks of the siege ladders snagged onto the city wall.

Mongolian shouts came from below.

As the Mongols scaled the walls, the archers defending them were greatly diminished.

The boulders and logs on the wall had already been exhausted, and no one was bringing more up from below.

“Let them come up and kill them!”

Jia Yu felt no panic within his heart, but instead a surge of excitement.

One hundred iron-clad soldiers formed a dense wall, taking over the defense area of the others.

The Mongols who had climbed the wall were just about to cheer.

Sharp blades sliced through their throats.

One down, another down.

The Xuanjia soldiers in their full iron armor were the pinnacle of any army during the cold weapon era.

“Follow me!”

A Mongolian warlord, wielding a spiked mace and towering at over two meters tall, climbed the siege ladder, making it sway precariously.

As soon as the Mongolian warlord appeared, Jia Yu recognized the man who had caused his previous self to sleep peacefully.

“You dog, you’re going to die!”

Jia Yu took a step forward, leaping into the air, his long blade cleaving towards the Mongolian warlord who was about to jump off the wall and enter the passage.

Rip!

Jia Yu’s speed was too fast.

So fast that the Mongolian warlord hadn’t even realized what was happening before his body was cleaved in two.

Blood drenched the other Mongols climbing up the wall.

This scene stunned the palace officials watching from the gate tower.

“Who is that man? He’s so brave!”

The Guangning Gate commander, clad in armor, stood beside him and replied, “Reporting to your eminence, that is Jia Yu, the third son of General Jia Shenwei, the first-rank God of Might General of the Jia family of Rongguo Mansion, the infantry platoon leader of the Five Armies Camp.”

“A descendant of the Rongguo Duke, no wonder he is so valiant!” The eunuch, pale and beardless, was excited, “With such a valiant warrior...”

Boom!

A tremendous explosion echoed from below, almost causing those on the gate tower to lose their footing.

“The gate is breached, follow me and charge in!”

The Mongol infantry at the gate retreated to both sides, and the cavalry waiting behind them charged forward with fierce momentum.

“Stop them!”

The defenders below and the young and strong men saw the gate breached, but they did not fear, bravely charging to meet the enemy.

If the city fell, the consequences would be unimaginable.

“Gou Dan, take fifty men and follow me!”

Seeing the enemy charging into the city, Jia Yu picked up the Mongolian warlord’s spiked mace and ran towards the city gate.

By the time Jia Yu reached the gate, the enemy cavalry was within arm’s reach.

“You dogs, taste the power of your grandpa!”

Jia Yu grabbed the barricades that had been pushed aside by the Mongol charge, hurled them towards the gate.

He raised his spiked mace and shouted,

“Anyone who isn’t afraid, come at me!”

Crack!

The spiked mace smashed into the Mongol blocking the way in front of him, turning him into a puddle of flesh.

Jia Yu didn’t slow down, continuing to charge forward, turning the Mongols he encountered into mangled corpses.

Finally, just as the enemy cavalry was about to charge into the city, Jia Yu stood his ground.

“Ahh!”

The spiked mace smashed into a Mongol horseman, crushing him and his horse together.

“Form a spear formation!”

As soon as the Xuanjia soldiers arrived, Jia Yu shouted, and they formed a formation with their three-meter-long spears.

Jia Yu, wielding his spiked mace, stood at the front.

Rumbling!

The Mongol cavalry charged.

“Kill!”

Jia Yu managed to smash three enemies, killing them, before being pushed back a few steps by a tremendous force.

That was the force of the charging warhorses.

“Thrust!”

The sharp spears of the Xuanjia soldiers pierced relentlessly into the enemy’s warhorses.

Five or six Xuanjia soldiers on Jia Yu’s sides were knocked back by the impact, but were held firm by their comrades.

They spat blood.

Once the enemy’s momentum had waned, those at the rear quickly swapped positions with those in front, carrying the wounded soldiers off the battlefield.

Clank!

Jia Yu felt that the spiked mace was not as handy, so he pulled out his long sword and charged into the city gate passage.

The enemy’s speed had slowed, it was time for a massacre.

It wasn’t long before the corpses piled up at the gate.

The Mongols in front began to flee, retreating back outside.

The Mongols at the rear continued to charge forward.

Jia Yu didn’t know how long he had been fighting.

The city gate passage was a sea of corpses.

The Xuanjia soldiers were pulling away the unclaimed warhorses.

Jia Yu felt drenched in sweat. After killing the few remaining Mongols before him, he saw the sun.

“Demon, he’s a demon!”

“We can’t possibly defeat a demon!”

“Eternal Heaven above, please take away this demon!”
